Don’t Just Watch

[original article]

Beth Fein felt confined. “What if ‘dance’ didn’t only happen inside buildings with the word ‘dance’ on them?” we imagine her saying to herself. “What if it were more sort of, I don’t know, celebratory, even anarchistic, or at least more informal? More fun?” She’s a lady who makes things happen, and thus was born Dance Anywhere. As you can probably guess from the name, it’s a free-for-all, coordinated in the sense that the fun part is in the coordination: Some time zone information is helpful, since the encouraged dancing is to take place at the same exact hour, whether you are in Namibia, Iceland, or under the Stars and Stripes. Thus, at noon, you may samba, perform entrechats en l’air, boogaloo, freak, Charleston, tap, samba, clog, or pole dance in excellent company. Facing East Dance and Music company takes the Asian Art Museum, Kara Davis and Dancers got SFMOMA, and Fein herself (along with a lot of friends) appears at Togonon Gallery, among notable local coordinates.
