Kim Epifano, director of Epiphany Productions Sonic Dance Theater, performed a structured improvisation in an alleyway lined with chalkboards on Mary Street, San Francisco.

Kim participated in dance anywhere®, because she supports the global mission of the project. “I am a big believer, supporter of people dancing everywhere and I have been a lucky artist dancing with people all over the world and in many unusual places!”

Kim’s performance was improvised on Mary Street in San Francisco where Intersection for the Arts and Rebeka Rodriguez have installed a series of large chalkboards for the community to write on and decorate. Kim said that she has participated in workshops on Mary Street and considers the area to be a part of her neighborhood.

“I walk through there almost everyday. I was excited to get out there by myself and improvise and interact with the people going down the street”. The chalk boards provided particularly enticing material for Kim’s improvisation. “The chalk boards are in questions who, what, when, where and why, so as a improviser there is a lot to play with”.

As Kim danced, Off the Grid food trucks served lunch to passerby and the band Jim Trout and the Fish people played live. Kim enjoyed this opportunity to interact with musicians whom she had never worked with before.

Kim found her dance anywhere® experience gratifying. “I don’t put myself out by myself much these days. I just felt this surge of joy and physical intensity that was very rewarding and I hope to do more of it!” As she danced she felt the energy of individuals dancing throughout the world. “Knowing that all around the world everybody was dancing at the same moment, made it so precious and important as an energetic connection”.

Kim looks forward to future participation: “dance anywhere® honors us as humans who know that one dance of any kind can change a life, a community, the environment, politics and the physical beast within us all!”
